Thành ngữ so sánh
Nhiều thành ngữ so sánh một người, một việc với một hình ảnh ai cũng biết, nối bằng chữ "như": nhanh như chớp, chậm như rùa. Tiếng Anh cũng nói như vậy, với as … as hay like, nhưng có khi chọn hình ảnh khác: người Việt khỏe như voi, người Anh khỏe như bò đực.Many Vietnamese idioms compare a person or a thing with a picture everyone knows, joined by như (like): as quick as lightning, as slow as a tortoise. English does the same with as … as or like, but sometimes picks a different picture: in Vietnamese you are as strong as an elephant, in English as strong as an ox.

Khỏe như voi
Voi là con vật to khỏe nhất trên cạn, kéo được cả những khúc gỗ lớn. Khỏe như voi là rất khỏe.The elephant is the strongest animal on land; it can pull huge logs. As strong as an elephant means very strong.
Ví dụ (example): Anh Tuấn khỏe như voi, một mình vác cả bao gạo lên gác.Tuấn is as strong as an ox: he carried a whole sack of rice upstairs on his own.

Con chuột bị ướt sũng, lông bết sát vào da như bị lột. Ướt như chuột lột là ướt sũng từ đầu đến chân.A soaked rat's fur clings to its skin as if it had been stripped off. As wet as a stripped rat means soaked from head to toe.
Ví dụ (example): Quên mang áo mưa, Vy về đến nhà thì ướt như chuột lột.Vy forgot her raincoat and got home looking like a drowned rat.

Như cá gặp nước
Con cá được thả về nước thì bơi lội thỏa thích. Người cũng vậy khi gặp đúng nơi, đúng việc hợp với mình: rất vui và làm rất giỏi.A fish put back into the water swims about happily. So do people who find just the place or task that suits them: they are happy and do well.

Như chó với mèo
Chó và mèo ở chung một nhà hay gầm gừ, cắn nhau. Như chó với mèo là hay cãi nhau, không hòa thuận.Dogs and cats in the same house often growl and fight. Like dog and cat means always quarrelling, never getting along.
Ví dụ (example): Hai anh em Tí và Tèo suốt ngày như chó với mèo, nhưng ai bắt nạt em thì anh bênh ngay.Tí and Tèo, two brothers, fight like cat and dog all day, but if anyone picks on the younger one, the older one stands up for him at once.

Rõ như ban ngày
Giữa ban ngày, trời sáng, cái gì cũng nhìn thấy rõ. Rõ như ban ngày là rất rõ ràng, ai cũng thấy, không thể chối cãi.In broad daylight, everything is plain to see. As clear as day means perfectly clear: everyone can see it and no one can deny it.
Ví dụ (example): Vết chân đầy bùn dẫn thẳng từ cửa đến giường của Bin. Ai làm bẩn nhà thì đã rõ như ban ngày.Muddy footprints led straight from the door to Bin's bed. Who had dirtied the house was as clear as day.

Tươi như hoa
Bông hoa mới nở thì tươi tắn, rực rỡ. Tươi như hoa là rất tươi tắn; người ta hay nói cười tươi như hoa, tức là nụ cười rạng rỡ.A newly opened flower is fresh and bright. As fresh as a flower means very fresh and bright; people often say someone smiles like a flower, meaning a radiant smile.

Nước đã chảy đi thì không giữ lại được. Tiêu tiền như nước là tiêu tiền rất phung phí, chẳng tiếc, chẳng tính toán.Water that has run away cannot be held back. To spend money like water is to waste it freely, without care or counting.

Nhẹ như lông hồng

Đứng ngây như phỗng

- ngây: đờ ra, không biết phản ứng gì.dazed, not knowing how to react.
- phỗng: tượng người nhỏ bằng đất hay đá, đứng yên một chỗ, thường đặt ở đình, chùa hay bên hòn non bộ.a small clay or stone figure of a man, standing still, often placed at temples or beside a rock garden.

Nói dối như Cuội
Từ khó (hard words): Cuội: chú Cuội, nhân vật truyện cổ tích nổi tiếng hay nói dối; người ta kể chú ngồi dưới gốc cây đa trên cung trăng.Cuội, a folk-tale character famous for telling lies; the story goes that he sits under a banyan tree on the moon.
Nói dối như Cuội là nói dối luôn miệng, nói dối thành quen như chú Cuội trong truyện, đến mức không ai tin được nữa.To lie like Cuội is to lie all the time, out of habit, like Cuội in the story, until no one can believe a word.
